We sin, but we confess
With full sincerity
Expecting back no less
Forgiveness utterly.

But then we sin some more,
Confess with saddened face,
Insistently implore
To be regaled with grace.

Again, returns the hurt,
Confession follows fast
With voices that assert
Forgiven sins have passed.

Confession may be good,
Payment by a debtor,
But, lo, it’s understood
Repentance is much better.
