How do you know that I love you?
Look upon all of my deeds.
My works, in volumes speak what’s true,
Giving account of your needs.

All the times that I did listen
Hours and hours on end.
Sacrificed sleep, all of this in
Efforts to your heart attend.

All the times I dropped everything
Quickly to rush to your side
Uncaring of what dangers bring,
Casting all safety aside.

All the times that I gave my time,
Best of my youth and my bloom,
All our moments spent in my prime,
Everything yours to consume.

All the times that I labored long
Doing things you loathed to do.
I toiled in pain; you hummed a song.
I worked while you rested through.

How do you know that I love you?
Look at things I never did.
The passive eye should here construe
Good in what’s quiet and hid.

All the times that I bit my lip
Wanting riposte fired back,
I swallowed down a scathing quip
Passing a perfect attack.

All the times that I took the hit
Whether slaps, insults, or blame,
Though faultless still did I submit
Bearing your guilt and your shame.

All the times that I let you take
Credit when it wasn’t due,
When scant the input you did make,
Centered yet all things on you.

All the times that I had ignored
Lies that you told out of fear,
The slights of me to friends outpoured,
Every cruel, unspoken sneer.

How do you know that I love you?
Noticed that I am still here?
My presence never I withdrew
All out of loving sincere.

All the times that I walked away
Suitors desiring my hand
With promises on full display
Offerings wealthy and grand.

All the times that I thought to run,
Spurn every promise and vow,
How every pain I longed to shun
Living for only the now.

All the times that I hated us
What we had sadly become
The hurts that piled so mountainous,
Bitterness making me numb.

All the times that I said goodbye
Watching my dreams fade away
To see so much of me then die
Tears flowing down every day.

How do you know that I love you?
See all this mess we call life?
Lived we long and seen it through
Hand in hand as man and wife.

Know that I always will love you.
You own my soul and my heart,
Enmeshed with you my love so grew
My life forever a part.
